Extra

I have continued my centre spread by creating another page with more of the article in the style of an interview. I read some of my magazines, mainly more magazine to design to questions and how celebrities answered them to create a realistic interview.
I have kept to the same colour scheme and used another photo from the same shoot. I made sure i fit the text around the image correctly, remembered page numbers and kept to the same style.

Photoshop + Magazine

During the process of creating my magazine, i have learnt and used a variety of photoshop skills. These would include:-
. Text effects eg drop shadow, outerglow and rotation, spacing ect
. Adding banners and shapes and erasing parts for a 'ripped paper' effect.
. Using the lasso tool to cut around images
. By using the lasso tool and I created layers of parts of my pictures to go over text/banners for a more proffessional look.
. Editing photos to improve quality and create a style suitable for my magazine, i liked to have high contrast images to make sure they are bold and stand out and this type of image is often used in all contemporary magazines. Also removing spots/blemishes and adding features eg eyelashes and eyeshadow.
. The use of layers and its important to order them in the right way.
. Adding sections of text for my article.
. Picking out colours so i stick to the 3 colour rule.

Also when developing my magazine it is important to remember all important magazine features eg: Price, barcode, dateline, main cover image, issue number, slogan, main cover line, coverlines, masthead, page numbers, website ..

I Like This Style Of Contents Page

It shows the main focus of who the main article is about, also the eye contact from the image creates an impact and engaging effect.

Contents page research

Centre spread ideas?

I realy like this centre spread idea, its simple yet effective and i realy like the use of the quote.
I also like how the image is reali big and the interview is smaller as it shows the main focus of who the interview is on.

Possible Cover Image?

I recently took some shots of my model and edited the best ones on photoshop. However i have booked the camera and studio to see if i can get anymore images, so i have a wide choice of photos to choose from to use on my cover, contents page and centre spread.
I like these 2 images.

What Makes A Good Magazine Cover?

I thought i would research into what makes a good magazine cover to help and guide me to do one myself. I found a good website which clearly explains why and what makes a good cover.

They say not to judge a book by it's cover, but for magazines, that's just what happens. Readers scan the cover for a glimpse of what's inside. So... the single most important thing is that the cover must be engaging. When you look at a magazine it must say, "pick me up now!" So what makes a magazine cover engaging?

The first thing is imagery. It must show the most fascinating, visually attractive image available (which is relevant to the issue's content). While some magazines (especially business magazines) have only type or illustrations on their covers, photography is by far the most used attention grabber.

The quality of photography and composition can make or break a magazine by helping or hindering sales. If you walk into a newsagent and take a look at the magazines available, you'll notice that the most popular subject on the covers are people. Why? Because it works.

There a few winning tips when it comes to having people on the cover. Eye contact is a must. The eyes are the window to the soul and can convey feelings and engage you. It's a good idea to keep the subjects head towards the top so that they peer above the magazine in the row below it.

Every magazine should have an easily identifiable masthead so the reader can quickly find the magazine they enjoyed last time. Well constructed and interesting cover lines are also very important. These cover lines should show a strong use typography which does not work against the imagery but supports it.

It's important also to have a strong use of colour. The use of colour can help convey the tone of the content. You'll find that black and white covers, or those that are dark, adopt a more serious tone. For some reason, a lot of green is a sales killer. We've heard this from others and we've seen it happen first hand.

Each title has their own combination of things that work on covers. After a bit of trial and error and market research, the designer and publisher can further narrow this down to a signature style which is repeated to ensure success. Some aim to be titillating. Some aim to be ultra stylish. Much of it depends on the tone and the audience you're trying to capture.

Magazine layout.

This diagram shows the main components needed for a front cover. This will help me when i come to arrange and put everything together on my cover. The main image is a very important feature of the magazine cover, so it is important that i get it right and it is appealing to the eye. The main cover line is also important as it is a taster to the main story ot the magazine so it must attract the audience. The masthead must be clear so the audience can identfy the name of the magazine.

Shoot

Over half term i decided to try to test shots of my model Vic Cull. When i have edited them on photoshop, i will see if any are good enough to use in my magazine, however i found that taking photos in a studio was easier as it was hard to create the same lighting effect elsewere.

Image Ideas

Ive been looking at a variety of images to inspire me and help me decide what type of shots to take for my front cover and centre spread.
I particularly liked many pictures of Kate Moss as her style matches the style i am hoping to present.

I dont want to produce a girly style magazine like smash hits, i want a Q style image, so i need to create an image which is sexy yet has an edge and i think these pictures of Kate Moss fit the criteria.

Magazine Title

Shuffle.
My magazine is going to be a more general music magazine rather than specializing it to a certain style of music. So my magazine is going to be similar to Q and NME.
So with it being called shuffle, its explains how the magazine has a variety of styles of music.
- Mix it up with SHUFFLE.
-Best Mix of music with SHUFFLE.
... synergy with iPod ?? iPod shuffle. Apples music mag?

Cheryl Cole Q magazine shoot

I think the Cheryl Cole cover of Q is gorgeous and is a fantastic picture for the cover. I was thinking of trying a similar style picture. I found a behind the scenes video of her shoot which i found helpful and interesting .

Magazine Ideas

I am having a female model on my cover so i have decided to look at magazines with females on the cover to see a variety of styles of how women have been presented.

Vic Cull - My Model

When i was told the magazine was going to be a music magazine, i knew who i was going to base my magazine on. My friend is a very talented singer, songwriter and plays several musical instruments. Therefore the interview will be very realistic and i can include accurate information rather than making something up. Vic has wrote and produced her own tracks and has also taken part in Winstanley's Got Talent and has performed at Winbalm which is were live acts from college can perform their music. Her music style is Electro/pop/rock so my style of magazine is not restricted. I think Vic is perfect for my model as she is a real musican and is photogenic and fits the part.

Why I decided to choose print?

I have always been a huge fan of magazines and i religiously buy 'More' magazine every Tuesday. So having the chance to design my own magazine cover and centre spread appealed to me more than creating a film. When doing the prelim for my magazine, the topic of a college magazine wasnt fantastic and neither was the prelim but its good to learn from mistakes and understand how i can improve. I also prefered using photoshop and enjoyed experimenting with different editting techniques.
