Evaluation!!

Thank you Good Charlotte :]

Here is a youtube video that I found on youtube of a behind the scenes photoshoot of good charlotte, this video inspired me to do media print and helped out along the way.

What i have learned...

I have learnt how to use different elements of photoshop effectively to edit images, text and organise a page and arrange layers. In addition to this i have used a number of tools to add effects to improve the preesentation of my magazine such as strokes, transformations, clone stamp tool, spot healing brush and other image effects; this has been extremely useful to get the best quality images for my magazine.
Furthermore, i have learnt how to setup the three point lighting in a studio to take images and use the digital camera. I have also learnt that you have to plan and prepare a lot to take images so you know where, what shots and how you are going to take the images. You should also take into consideration the setting, props and clothes of the model.
Overall i have thoroughly enjoyed creating my media product and have improved my knowledge on photoshop and learnt how to create a magazine. It has been a great experience.

Double page spread finished

I have finished my double page spread after changing a number of things such as making the picture bigger, adding a background behind the text to make it seem less structured and plain. In addition to this I slanted the title from left to right to make the page stand out. This had more of an impact on the reader as it was across two pages dominating the top of the pages. Unfortunately i do not know how to upload this image from publisher so could not include it.

Double page spread research

I researched a variety of double page spreads for my magazine to look for common conventions i found that most had a large image of a band/artist, an article, bold title, a sub heading under the title. I have included all of these conventions in my magazine to make it as appealing as possible to the reader.

Contenst page finished.

Here is my finished contents page I have added a scratch effect in the background to make it more interesting to look at. I have also used the bold title that i researched in the NME magazines. As well as this i have used informative headings on the left of the page to seperate the different categories in the magazine. I have also used images of bands that i took to add to make the magazine diverse of music genres.

Contents Page

I have researched my front cover and found a good example I would like to base it on. I like the titles on the right of the page that are divided into sections to split up the categories in the magazine. There is a band index down the left side of the page which is a common media convention. I also like the large bold "This week", this lets the reader know instantly what page is about.

IND!!

I have not explained why i chose IND as the title of my magazine. IND is a play on words of Indie, this makes it more appealing and interesting to the reader which encourages them to purchase my magazine. I have kept the colour of the title the same as the fornt cover to maintain consistency.

Front Cover Done, Whats next.

I have almost finished my front cover now, i have created a good magazine front cover with a range of media conventions and have tried to relate to the reader through my image and exclusives in the magazine. I have also used a red, black and white colour scheme that is also used in NME, this gives a more sophisticated feel to my magazine.

BAD photoshoot, lessons learnt.

I did a photoshoot with a friend and the images that were taken wern't great. I should have completed more research to change the positions that he was posed in. In addition to this I should have looked more closely at costume and more stlyes linked closely with the genre in my magazine (Indie). However I learned from these mistakes and changed the model to fit in with the magazine and relate to the audience as it was aimed at people over the age of 17 this helped me to produce better images for my magazine.

Da Font !!

I have been on a website called dafont, that supplies a whole range of diifferent fonts of texts; this is extremely useful as it allows me to give represent my magazine in different ways. I have looked at fonts called "birth of a her, riesling, octember", these make my magazine look more interesting and more aesthetically pleasing for the reader.

More Photoshoot

I have decided to take this image outside to use the natural light and have got him to hold the guitar to show that he is a musician. I have him leaning against the wall to give him more attitude and show that he is a confident artist. Unfortunately i had to edit the top left corner of the page as it had a metal beams in it; apart from that i am very pleased with the image.

Photoshoot

I was very happy with my photoshoot and the pictures that I got out of it, i took a lot longer than I expected but was definately worth it. I used the 3 point lighting system to get the best setting to take my pictures.

Inspiration

Alot of my ideas have come from the magazine NME, i have looked at photos for all the pages and are basing mine off that (I'll post the photos later). I have also used their colour scheme as it has a fresh, cool and modern look; which should appeal to my target audience. In addition to this i will include some colour on certain words on my front cover to help the headlines stand out, which has been take from the magazine Blender.

On my double page spread i will have a large image that will have text going over it however the text may not be clear enough to see and this may be a problem, this was a homage to NME.

My contents page will have an image in the top right corner and text going down the left and across the bottom this gives the page detail but does not make the page look too complicated.

Production

I have booked the studio for tomorrow, so i can take photos for my front cover, double page spread and contents page. I will be taking close up shots for the front cover and using medium shots for the other pages. Hopefully things shall go to plan :)

Research (I forgot to put on)

I have decided to base my magazine on the Indie style of music and have looked at magazines from NME, Billboard, Blender and Clash. I like the red and black colour schemes in the NME and have decided to use one model for my magazine as it will be easier to organise and plan but will still look good. The Clash magazine is quite busy and has a more mature target audience;i think that it is too complicated to add this level of detail in my magazine. Billboard looks simple but effective, i like the way the model stands out from the magazines as he is wearing quite vibrant, colourful clothes. The Blender magazine has a good blend of text and space for the image of the model, i believe this will be something to take into account when creating my front cover to ensure it is not too clustered or too plain.

Front Cover

I have just started my front cover and have thought of a good name for my magazine, i have also started to create some headlines. The stories include bands that have the same style music as the magazine this helps to keep consisentcy in the magazine. In addition to this i have chosen a black, white and red colour scheme for my magazine; i have looked at my research and found that these were the most appealing colours.

Monday, 8 February 2010

After completing the preliminary exercises for film and print, I decided to choose the print task for my media coursework as I enjoyed this exercise the most; In addition to this I am comfortable using Photoshop as I have created a newspaper front cover and contents pages which are similar to magazines. Before starting my magazine, I have researched different types of music magazines to give me inspiration and ideas, this helped me to decide on which type of magazine I would create and what features I would include in it.
I have decided to base my magazine on NME, and have used it as examples above.

Prelim

Here is my prelim that i worked on with three other people. The image of the girl is good as it shows her having a good time, however the text that is used is not the same size and the colours do not match. Overall the prelim is okay, it has a good image and title but there are no media conventions and the text is inconsistent.
