Sound Effects

http://www.sounddogs.com
We used various sound effects throughout our radio show. For example:
  • 'Whoosh' the transition between the outside broadcast and the recorded interview
  • The taxi starting, the club music and the champagne glasses clinking during Laura's recorded interview.
  • The ambience sound played over the top of the outside broadcast to create a night time, clubbing atmosphere and to create the impression that Tom was outside.
  • Sirens and gangs of rowdy people during the outside broadcast, we believed this would enhance the realism of the outside broadcast, as these are typically noises you would hear on a busy street at night time.

Script

Following our research, we began to script our actual radio show. We wanted to get a natural banter edge to it, as radio shows currently in the market that are targetted at a similar audience as ours, seem to have a natural banter between the presenters and a fun like atmosphere in the studio, we wanted to create a similar situation to this.

Here is one page of our script. We initially created a rough script yet improvised as we recorded to create our intended natural feel to it.

Recorded Interviews

When choosing the actors and actresses for our recorded sections of our radio show, we had to consider the voices and accents of the people we were using to ensure that their voices matched the character we intended them to play.
For example, the police man had to sound authorititive, formal, and older. We sampled a few male members of our class by asking them to speak a short line out of our script, so we could see how their voices sounded, yet concluded that an older male teacher suited the part better.

Next, the part of Becky Owens who reached the final stages of a talent show was chosen by selecting somebody who sounded young, and who made her excitement seem believable. We didnt feel the need to sample some possible candidates for this part as we already had a friend in mind who would fit in with the qualities we needed for this role.

However, the parts of Rob and Jenny, the passers by on a night out during our outside broadcast, needed to sound young and accessible by our viewers. After sampling many class members and friends by again asking them to record a short section of our script, we settled on a male and a female who sounded from the local area, and were successful in sounding like they had actually just been stopped on a night out.

Finally, Laura, the main recorded interview of a drink spike victim. We required somebody dynamic to make the part seem authentic and unrehearsed. We believed a real drink spike victim would sound vulnerable, we looked for this quality in the actresses, as well as wanting her to sound pleasant, so the listeners would relate to her. We knew the girl who we wanted to play this part immediatley, as when we sampled her, her voice sounded sweet and like the character that we intended her to play.

Below is 3 samples of other potential characters.

Outside Broadcast/ Vox Populi

To begin, we needed an ambience sound to overlay our outside broadcast. We believed it would be easier to get a pre-made clip and play it along side our vox pop interview rather than actually record the interview outside.
http://www.sounddogs.com/
We used this website as well as looking through CD's owned by the college to find what we were looking for, we wanted something that was relevant to our show's theme of a busy nightlife scene. We found two clips, one consisting of traffic and highstreet noises, and the other including night club music and voices. We plan to combine these to create a perfect sounding city, night time atmosphere.

Jingle

When looking for a jingle, we came across a track that we believed to be suitable to play over our news section. Following research into local radio news, we found that the majority also played a track under the presenter's voice.

This website was the one in which we found our news track.

Order of Radio Show

After looking at various radio shows from all different times of the day, we closely observed the order of events within the shows. We looked at:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006wkcj -
Radio 1
http://www.realradionorthwest.co.uk/station/listen-live/k8um6mai/ -
Real Radio
Among others, we concluded that the structure varied depending on what time of the day it was. For our night time show, we decided on the following structure:

Studio Images & Research

We took some time to look into the equipment used for radio broadcasting on popular radio shows and compared it to the recording equipment that Winstanley college has to offer. We discovered that the college has a variety of up to date equipment, and we looked into various pieces in great detail to familiarise ourselves with them.
Below are some images we took of our group in the radio studio during research:

Radio Station & Show Title

We composed a brainstorm for our radio title.

We decided on Radio Now, as it's the most relevant to our task and we believed it had a good sound to it. This will be the name that the listeners initially hear and sounded either during or just after the jingle.

Focus Group

We presented our proposed ideas to a group of local teenagers. We recorded their responses.
Click play above to listen to our feedback which we will take into consideration when preparing for our real task.

Although we did not recieve any suggestions that we had not already considered, it was reassuring and beneficial to know that other teenagers from the local area agreed and supported our ideas.

Questionnaire

We created a questionnaire to gather feedback from local teenagers and observe their responses with regards to radio.

This is a blank copy of our questionnaire

This is one of our examples that we collected in from our target audience, we chose this example as we believed it was an overall compilation of the general consensus we receieved. The majority of people stated they liked music and news, and would generally listen to radio in drive time hours. We decided to stick to the content that our target audience had stated, yet as we wanted to target a niche in the market, we decided our radio show would be for people preparing for a night out, as there are already many breakfast and drivetime shows and not many friday night shows.

Drink Spiking Research

http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Drink-spiking/Pages/Introduction.aspx
Here we found the basic information about drink spiking and the motives behind the people who are involved with drink spiking.
The most common reasons are:

Brainstorm of News Ideas

This is a brainstorm of ideas that we created to propose our possible ideas for the news bulletin of our radio. We narrowed our ideas down to STI rates and drink spiking. Although we believed both stories would be beneficial to people preparing for a night out, as they would lead listeners to be more cautious, we figured that drink spiking would be more relevant as you are more likely to consume alcohol on a night out than have sex. Therefore we looked further into drink spiking.

News

The coursework specification states that we have to include a news bulletin. After looking into various news sections of different radio stations and observing the length, content and features of them.
An example of a news bulletin we listened to was the Radio One News Beat:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/hi/default.stm

We concluded that in order to attract a teen audience yet also relate to our chosen radio slot, we would have to brainstorm our ideas to see which was most relevant.

After discussion and deliberation within the group, we figured that a radio slot targetted at people preparing for a night out would have to involve a news bulletin that was relative to this in some way.

Research

We started to research existing radio shows and issues that we would need to take into consideration when creating our own show.

Originally, we began by listening to local breakfast shows that are aired during the morning prime time. Being drive-time shows, the demographic they were targetting was broad and unspecified to a particular age or gender. We looked at Wish FM and Real Radio. The content of these radios are targetted at a wide range of ages and both genders, the music is appealing to a larger audience rather than aimed at a specific group of people. The websites we looked at were:
http://www.wishfm.net/
http://www.realradio.co.uk/
These are two websites among many that we looked at, after listening to the breakfast and daytime shows of these radio stations we figured that there are currently too many local radio shows that focus on day time entertainment that are targetted at more of a family based audience.
Although we could see the potential positives of doing a show like this, we were more interested in targetting a niche that there may be for teenagers in the current market.

Preliminary Exercises

We decided to complete all 3 preliminary activities in order to decide which aspect of media we wanted to complete our coursework in. Therefore we made a film, a magazine cover and contents page, and a short radio clip.
------------------------------------------------------------
Below is the film preliminary task, we decided to create a blind date effect, including the compulsary elements, a match on action and shot reverse shot, as well as remembering to not break the 180 degree rule.
---------------------------------------------
We then completed the print preliminary task, the brief stated we must make a front cover and a contents page of a magazine targetted at teen
audiences, as it was our first attempt, it is missing some key elements. However we did gain basic knowledge of the Photoshop software and tools that will hopefully help us in our future work.
--------------------------------
Finally we completed the radio preliminary task. The brief stated we must include a jingle, a short conversation between the radio presenter and a guest, concluding with a short archive relating to the guest. We decided to include a Hollywood film star, and our archive was a short clip taken from an action film. Below is a video, containing the audio version of our preliminary task.

------------------------------------------------------------
After much deliberation, we decided to complete our actual coursework task for radio.
We agreed after many attempts at rearranging the layout and style of our magazine front cover, that print was not the media aspect we wished to complete our coursework in.
Although we enjoyed making and editing our film, we found that the filming process was too time consuming in comparison to the radio recording process. However the skills we learned from the film editing process we plan to use when editing our radio material, for example we recorded our own applause clip and learned how to cut and insert it to our final piece.
