Chosing my project.

Throughout the year we have learnt about the different media areas, always knowing that we would have to eventually choose one of them to do our coursework. After completing the prelims in print and film I faced a choice; print, film, web design or radio. As I have little experience in any of the areas, I decided I would go with print. I enjoyed the creative input I could have into the photo shoots, the putting together of the magazine and the fact that the final product was all my own work.

As a dedicated buyer of Glamour magazine, the thought that i could make a magazine on my own was fascinating to say the least. I have read magazines all of my life, which has given me a basic understanding of writing, and shown me which articals are in particular types of magazine.

Touch - Flamboyant Bella
This is one of the music videos i looked to for inspiration for my magazine's genre.

A-punk - Vampire weekend
Another video that inspired me genre choice.

The videos are fun, bright and a perfect representation of the Liverpool/Manchester unsigned music scene at the moment. From seeing bands like this live i have grown to love this type of music and have decided that i want to do a music magazine based on unsigned music. The genre of music would be electro/power pop/indie. It offers something new to the music scene and most of the bands that i know of with this style of music have a lot of 80's influences.

A few of the bands that have influenced my choice are:

  • Flamboyant Bella
  • Vampire Weekend
  • Delphic
  • The temper trap
  • Owl City
  • Soft toy emergency
  • Passion Pit
  • Yeah yeah yeahs
The electro vibes that these bands portray give them a very hip, young following. Most of their big fans are very music orientated and go to a lot of live gigs, this particular type of music is very popular with students. I believe there is a large gap in the market for a magazine like this that doesn't not just report on the successful bands, but also on up and coming acts and give them the recognition that they deserve.
