For our coursework research we watched various clips from the opening sequences of films. The opening sequence that inspired us the most was ‘Confessions of a Shopaholic’.
It began with a montage of clips from the main character’s childhood, overlaid with a voice over from the main character as an adult. The bright colours allude to the genre of the film, giving it an upbeat, feminine feel.
Pathos is created for the main character through the camera angles and slow-motion shots as the audience are introduced to her. The themes are conveyed through the succession of shots focused on fashion and shopping, which delineates the film’s storyline.
To progress the film from the flashback to the present, the camera shot uses a match on action. The audience see a contrast from the main character as a child to her becoming an adult and through the camera shots. Assumptions are made as to who the main character is.
This is the clip that inspired us:
Natalie, Liz and Hannah.
