Vibe Magazine – R&B and Hip Hop - American
Colour scheme changes per Magazine to best fit photo used, photo placed over text layers such as title which creates a 3D effect, also uses bold easy to use texts and colours that stand out and separate themselves from the background. Quite simple and minimalistic, this being an approach i like.
Kerrang – Rock/Metal/Punk/Alternative - American
Unlike Vibe magazine Kerrang uses a more crammed in approach with lots of text, and lots of things going on using more than one image mostly. The text is bold and again easy to read also they do use the image layered over the title to create a 3D effect like vibe. I don’t like this style of magazine as I think too much is going on and it does not capture me, this being a personal preference.
NME – Indie – British
NME’s Covers vary in style but are focused on one main image with in some cases smaller images in places on the page, also each magazine has a colour scheme of bold colours that is kept to on that particular mag. This magazine also uses banners and shapes with text placed on top so they stand out and also uses bold easy to use fonts. The photos used are not always studio based like VIBE but location based too
Billboard – All Genres – America
The billboard magazine is the offical magazine for the US charts so the magazine features a range of genres. The magazine is very similar to VIBE in the way that there is nearly always only one image that image the whole focus of the front cover. This magazine also uses only a few big main titles with subtitles and text alot smaller. The design is very simplistic and in my opinion very effective, and i would really like a simplistic design in my own magazine.
